Everyone Likes Sprinkles

I’m here at the inaugural NY Vet Conference hosted by Brief Media in NY City! Being from Colorado, it is quite a treat to come to the Big Apple. I woke up early (5am) and decided to get up and enjoy the quiet buzz of energy in the early hour while Hadley and Karyn are snoozing away in our hotel room.

I’m staying in NY Times Square so it’s hard not to find a Starbucks open even at this hour. While I’m waiting for my latte, I can’t help but notice the 6 construction workers in line ahead of me waiting on their coffee too. These are real guys in Carhartts, and coveralls. They are up and ready for work, starting their day (or maybe ending it) while everyone else is sleeping. Then their coffees start rolling out except for they are lattes, mochas and frappuccinos. The male barista makes each one with care with varying combinations of espresso, whipped cream, swirled caramel and sprinkles before the lid is placed on the cup.

It makes me think of my clients at my veterinary practice (before I left to run my tech company) and question if I gave them enough “sprinkles” when I was taking care of their patients. When we get so busy getting ‘work done’, we don’t make time for the little touches that actually matter that most. Whether that is making a note to call a widowed senior client on their birthday, taking a few extra minutes to shave a mat out of a dog, or updating a client about their pet’s status in the hospital. These are the sprinkles that matter and makes people feel special, whether you are drinking a latte on the coldest day in NYC or waiting anxiously for your pet to get out of surgery.
